Building Tomorrow's Workforce Through STEM Education

Recently, GSC hosted a community resource booth focused on STEM education and hands-on learning. Through this collaborative effort, we engaged local youth in exciting activities that sparked curiosity, encouraged critical thinking, and introduced them to the many possibilities STEM fields offer.

The timing of this event was especially important. Like many communities across the country, our local area has experienced significant reductions in STEM education funding. These cuts can limit students' opportunities to explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics at an early age. By offering interactive learning experiences, we hope to help bridge that gap and continue inspiring the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders.

At our booth, students of all ages were invited to become "Sun Detectives" as they created their own UV-powered keychains. Using UV-sensitive, color-changing beads and colorful paracord, participants crafted a unique keepsake that demonstrated a real scientific phenomenon. As the beads changed color under ultraviolet light, students saw science in action right before their eyes.

While working on their keychains, students learned fascinating facts about our closest star, the Sun. We encouraged discussion by asking questions about the Sun's powerful ultraviolet rays and their effects on people every day. Could you still get sunburned on a cloudy day? Why is sunscreen important even when the temperature feels cool? These conversations helped students connect scientific concepts to their everyday experiences.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the event was witnessing students' natural curiosity emerge. Simple questions often sparked deeper discussions about weather, energy, space, and science. By encouraging students to ask questions, investigate ideas, and think critically, we help build the skills essential to success in future STEM careers.
